This cabinet displays a story of two different worlds living in harmony. The current flood of migrants from Islamic countries moving to the Western world is mostly seen as a cause of trouble. I’ve studied traditional crafts of the countries that produce migrants and that has inspired me engaging on a project highlighting the positive sides of the migration flow. New people come with new traditions only marginally known to us. They bring knowledge and skill. This project is about what we can learn from different cultures. This cabinet literally displays the very skills by which it was forged. A frame inspired by the Middle Eastern ‘Mashrabiya’ technique. The shelves are fixed with Western mortise-and-tenon joints. The frame and shelves meet in a serene and harmonious way. This can be seen as a reflection of how we should embrace the new inhabitants.
